15th Annual Rockrimmon Regatta

UMass opens season at Rockrimmon Regatta

This past Saturday, the Aggies began their 2019 fall racing schedule with the Rockrimmon Regatta in Springfield. It marked UMass’s first race since the ACRA national championships last May on Lake Lanier. The regatta essentially served as an intra-squad scrimmage for the Aggies. Racing four 2-’s, against just one other entry, and three 4+’s with two boats from Wentworth also in the event.

Conditions were calm all day, with slight winds of five mph and temperatures in the mid-50’s. The course was staked 2,500 meters down the river, meaning that coxswains and bowman had to make an 180 degree turn to port and travel another 2,500 meters back upstream in order to complete their race.

In the Open 2- category, senior Matt Hobbes and junior Kedar Seetal dominated the field and finished with the fastest time out of every boat on the day with a 19:10.042 mark. Joe Wenzel and Atticus Kane finished second in 21:05.729, while Will Pratt and Carl Weigel earned third in 21:36.228

Later that morning, UMass’s “A” 4+ placed second in a time of 19:39.689, finishing just one second behind Wentworth’s “A” 4+. UMass “C” rounded out the top-three of the Collegiate 4+ event, completing the course in a time of 20:59.572.

With their first race in the books, the Aggies won’t see action again until mid-October. However, in two weeks the team will be traveling to Boston for the weekend to complete their annual Head of the Charles training camp at CRI.
