Aggies conclude weekend with victories across the board in Lowell
By Sean Richardson
The Aggies concluded their weekend of racing in Lowell Sunday with the first-ever New England State University Regatta. UMass had a clean sweep, winning all four of their events against the other state schools. (Boston College also raced several boats, but competed merely for exhibition.)
Conditions on the Merrimack River were favorable, racing with the current, a tail wind that died down as the day went on, and temperatures that creeped up into the 60s.
The 3V started the day with a dominant performance in their event. Beating Boston College and UConn by open water en route to a 6:06.0 mark. Shortly after, the novice eight had a come behind victory, taking down UConn in the final 500 meters of their race in a time of 5:57.4.
Following a brief intermission in the racing, the 2V kept things rolling with another UMass victory. Finishing the course in 5:58.6 thanks to a strong start that put them in control over the field early. The first varsity eight completed the Aggies sweep, posting a 5:54.0 time in the regatta’s final event.
Massachusetts will pick things back up Saturday when the team travels to Tufts to take on Bates and Wesleyan in a round robin-robin matchup. Racing will take place on the Malden River with start times yet to be determined.
